US President Donald Trump claimed Iranian leaders requested a temporary pause in hostilities during the funeral of former Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, alleging they feared being targeted by the United States.
Speaking to reporters, Trump accused Iran of reigniting the conflict after the pause was granted.
“They asked for a timeout, they wanted to go to the funeral of Khamenei, and I said give it to them, and they start shooting missiles,” Trump said.
The US president also acknowledged that Ali Khamenei had been killed during the opening phase of the conflict.
“Now we did kill him, so I guess you have to look at it that way,” he said.
Trump further claimed Iranian officials had sought assurances that they would not be targeted during the funeral proceedings.
“They also asked that we not kill them, and we said we’re not going to kill you,” he added.
The Iranian government has not immediately responded to Trump's statements.
