On May 22, within the framework of WUF13, a panel discussion titled “Safe Reconstruction: The Role of Demining Activities in Urban Recovery and Reconstruction” was held with the joint organization of the Non-Aligned Movement Youth Organization (NAMYO).
According to EDnews, the event took place at the Azerbaijan pavilion located within the “WUF13 Urban Expo” and was opened with introductory remarks by Member of Parliament Nigar Mammadova.
In her speech, she highlighted the seriousness of the landmine problem in Azerbaijan’s liberated territories and its impact on reconstruction and development processes.
The panel, moderated by Naila Habibzade, Assistant for International Relations and Donor Affairs at NAMYO, featured speeches by Fuad Huseynov, Deputy Chairman of the State Committee for Refugees and Internally Displaced Persons of the Republic of Azerbaijan; Leyla Hasanova, Chairperson of NAMYO; Umud Mirzayev, President of the International Eurasia Press Fund and Chairman of the Public Council under ANAMA; and Elnur Gasimov, Head of the Monitoring and Quality Assurance Department of ANAMA.
In addition, John Ayomide, a staff member of the Program Department of the International Eurasia Press Fund, delivered a presentation on the organization’s demining activities.
During the discussions, participants extensively analyzed the role of youth in post-crisis urban recovery, as well as the importance of demining activities in creating a safe living environment, restoring housing and infrastructure, and ensuring the safe return of communities.
It was noted that these challenges remain highly relevant for many member states of the Non-Aligned Movement, which continue to face serious difficulties caused by landmine contamination, forced displacement, and destroyed infrastructure. Azerbaijan, as an active member of the Non-Aligned Movement and one of the countries most heavily contaminated by landmines in the world, has repeatedly emphasized that the mine threat remains one of the principal obstacles to reconstruction and humanitarian activities, particularly in the liberated territories.
The event concluded with an interactive question-and-answer session between the speakers and participants.
