On May 21, within the framework of WUF13, an event titled “Urban Planning Challenges in Mine-Contaminated Areas” was held at the pavilion of the Global South NGO Platform, organized by the International Eurasia Press Fund IEPF.
According to EDnews, in his opening remarks, IEPF President Umud Mirzayev drew attention to the seriousness of Azerbaijan’s landmine problem:
“The development of infrastructure, the restoration of social life, and the preservation of ecological balance in mine-contaminated areas can only become possible after a safe environment has been established. In this regard, it is extremely important to approach mine action from the perspectives of urban planning, ecosystem restoration, and human security. During today’s event, distinguished speakers will address the negative impacts of landmines from various aspects, including security, urban development, ecological balance, and post-conflict recovery,” said Umud Mirzayev.
Following this, the moderator of the event, Emil Hasanov, Deputy Chairman of the Public Council under ANAMA, welcomed the participants and introduced the guests.
The speakers included:
Ramil Azizov, Head of the Awareness and Victim Assistance Department at ANAMA, who spoke on “Innovations in Demining”;
Khudaverdi Guliyev, Head of the Program Department at IEPF, who presented on “IEPF’s Mine Action Program”;
Scott Derry, Project Manager at the demining company “Delta Clearing Solutions,” who discussed “Creating Safe Ground for Urban Recovery”;
Amin Mammadov, Chairman of the Public Council under the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources of Azerbaijan, who delivered a presentation titled “Landmines as a Threat to Ecosystems and an Obstacle to the Restoration of Post-Conflict Settlements.”
The event was also attended by two female deminers from IEPF’s “Community Mine Action” team.
At the end of the event, an interactive Q&A session was held between the speakers and participants.
