US Special Envoy for Iraq and Syria Tom Barrack and Iraqi Prime Minister Ali Al-Zaidi have discussed Baghdad’s ongoing efforts to place all weapons under exclusive state control and advance measures aimed at strengthening Iraq’s sovereignty.
EDnews reports, citing a joint statement released by the US Embassy in Baghdad, that the talks took place during a meeting held on Monday.
According to the statement, the two sides discussed a shared vision for building a more secure and prosperous Iraq free from terrorism. The meeting also focused on plans to disarm and dissolve armed groups operating outside state authority, consolidate all weapons under government control, and prevent Iraq from being drawn into regional conflicts.
“Prime Minister Al-Zaidi and Special Presidential Envoy Barrack underscored the urgency in full completion of these efforts,” the statement noted.
The officials also reaffirmed their commitment to expanding trade and investment cooperation between the two countries.
They welcomed several recent developments, including the granting of a Starlink license, ongoing discussions with Chevron regarding major oil fields, the return of US energy companies under enhanced security guarantees, and plans with TI Capital to rehabilitate the Kirkuk–Baniyas oil pipeline.
Energy cooperation was another key topic of discussion, with both sides highlighting projects aimed at meeting Iraq’s growing energy demands, including the development of an LNG import terminal at Khor Zubair.
The statement emphasized the importance of supporting “a strong, sovereign, and united federal democratic Iraq,” founded on effective constitutional institutions and equal rights for all citizens, as a means of promoting the country’s unity, stability, and prosperity.
During the meeting, Barrack also conveyed that US President Donald Trump looks forward to welcoming Prime Minister Al-Zaidi to the White House in mid-July to discuss the future of bilateral relations and cooperation.
