Kremlin Press Secretary Dmitry Peskov said on Thursday that Russian warships conducting exercises in Cuba are routine. The comment comes a day after Russian navy ships and a Yasen-M-class guided missile nuclear submarine, the Kazan, arrived in Cuban territorial waters, just 90 miles away from the United States.
"Military exercises are a normal practice in various regions of the world, particularly for large maritime powers such as the Russian Federation," Peskov told reporters. At the same time, the Kremlin representative highlighted that such visits are common and do not indicate any threat. The Russian fleet in Cuba includes the frigate Admiral Gorshkov, the supply tanker Akademik Pashin, and the rescue tug Nikolai Chiker.
The presence of the Russian Navy near Cuba has drawn attention from the US, which is closely monitoring the situation. According to a previous statement from the Russian Ministry of Defence, the exercises are part of Russia's ongoing global maritime operations, underscoring its significant naval capabilities.
