An event dedicated to the memory of Azerbaijanis who fought for the liberation of France during World War II was held in Paris, EDnews report.
The event was attended by Azerbaijan's Ambassador to France Leyla Abdullayeva, the embassy's military attaché Colonel Javid Abdullayev, military personnel, French scientists, professors, businessmen, researchers, and public representatives.
Leyla Abdullayeva emphasized that World War II was the bloodiest war in human history and spoke about the sacrifices and heroism shown by Azerbaijanis in this war. She noted that more than 600,000 people from Soviet Azerbaijan were involved in the war, and many of them worked valiantly both on the front lines and behind them.
Javid Abdullayev stated that just as Azerbaijan's oil played a decisive role in the victory of the Soviet army, the heroism demonstrated by Azerbaijan's sons and daughters at the cost of their lives and blood should not be forgotten.
The military attaché particularly drew attention to the activities of Azerbaijani partisans who participated in the liberation of France from Nazi occupation. Among them, Ahmadiyya Jabrayilov (known in France as Michel) was especially mentioned. He was one of the first Azerbaijanis to participate in the French Resistance Movement. Other Azerbaijani partisans – Idris Hashimov and Khalaf Hajiyev – were also commemorated at the event.
During the event, family members of these heroes shared their memories.
