A scientific seminar titled “Trophic and Biotopic Relationships of Birds on the Southwestern Coast of the Caspian Sea” was held by Professor Abulfaz Taghiyev, Head of the Department of Zoology and Physiology at the Faculty of Biology of Baku State University.
According to EDnews, the seminar focused on research conducted between 2015 and 2024 in Absheron, Shirvan, and Gizilaghaj National Parks, as well as in the Kura River Delta. The research findings show that the decline in the Caspian Sea’s water level has significantly affected the food base, population structure, and settlement areas of bird species. Notable behavioral changes have been observed in the breeding patterns of some species ,which have begun nesting in colonies in new areas such as field-protective forest strips. The importance of these changes for biodiversity management and conservation was emphasized.
During the study, the trophic and biotopic relationships of 126 bird species from 13 orders during reproduction and wintering periods were mapped and analyzed using GIS technologies. Additionally, 22 rare bird species listed in the “Red Book” of the Republic of Azerbaijan were also observed during the research.
