CARACAS — Amnesty International Secretary General Agnes Callamard has warned that the recent earthquakes in Venezuela could deepen the country's long-running humanitarian and human rights crisis.
In a statement, Callamard said the disaster risks "further compounding an already severe and protracted human rights crisis and humanitarian emergency suffered by the Venezuelan people for over a decade."
She noted that Venezuela's healthcare system has been severely weakened and said ongoing state repression has undermined the protection of human rights, increasing the challenges facing communities affected by the earthquakes.
Callamard called on Venezuelan authorities to ensure relief operations are carried out in line with humanitarian and disaster response standards, as well as international human rights law.
She also urged the international community to mobilize rapidly and deliver the humanitarian assistance needed to support those affected by the disaster.
