Participants of the international thematic conference “Towards the Decolonization of Guadeloupe: Challenges and Prospects” held in Baku have adopted a final declaration.
According to Report, the document was read out by Abbas Abbasov, Executive Director of the Baku Initiative Group (BIG).
“We support the continuation of dialogue, cooperation, and the exchange of views between peoples and movements affected by colonialism. At the same time, we emphasize the importance of international platforms such as BIG. These platforms play a vital role in bringing the voices of oppressed peoples to the global community and promoting the global decolonization agenda at international forums,” the declaration states.
The document expresses support for a peaceful, fair, and democratic transition of the people of Guadeloupe toward sovereignty.
“We underline the need for inclusive dialogue, recognition of historical truth, cultural and linguistic revival, fair compensation, as well as the decolonization of institutions and the education system to eliminate the colonial legacy… We express our strong solidarity with peoples still living under colonial oppression in the world and reaffirm our support for their right to freely determine their future in accordance with international law.
In this regard, we call on the United Nations and relevant international and regional organizations to support the decolonization process of Guadeloupe, to take concrete measures to reinstate Guadeloupe on the UN list of Non-Self-Governing Territories, and to take a firm stance on this issue,” the declaration states.
“The future of Guadeloupe belongs solely to its people. We express our deep gratitude to Azerbaijan and BIG for organizing this important conference and for their invaluable support in advancing global decolonization issues,” the document concludes.
