The development of relations with neighboring countries has always held a special place in Azerbaijan’s foreign policy. Based on national interests, the principles of partnership and mutually beneficial cooperation form a key priority for our state. In this context, reciprocal visits and the signing of strategic documents play an essential role in advancing bilateral relations. The recent visit of Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian to Azerbaijan marks an important milestone in the further development of Azerbaijan-Iran relations.
These ties are deeply rooted in a shared history and culture. For centuries, economic, trade, scientific, and cultural connections have brought the peoples of Azerbaijan and Iran closer. Built on mutual respect and friendship, our relations continue to develop steadily across bilateral, regional, and international platforms.
According to EDnews Member of Parliament Vugar Rahimzadeh emphasized that relations between the two countries are grounded in a common historical and cultural heritage, solidarity, and mutual support. He noted that these strong foundations have created favorable conditions for cooperation across various sectors, including trade, energy, logistics, and transportation.
Diplomatic relations between Azerbaijan and Iran were formally established in 1992, although Iran had already opened a consulate in Baku in 1969. Iran’s Embassy in Baku has been active since March 1992, while Azerbaijan’s Embassy in Tehran began operating in December of the same year. In addition, Iran’s Consulate General was established in Nakhchivan in 1992, and Azerbaijan opened its Consulate General in Tabriz in 2004 clear evidence of the mutual interest in deepening bilateral ties.
Rahimzadeh highlighted the significance of the recent meetings and agreements signed between Presidents Ilham Aliyev and Masoud Pezeshkian. He stressed that such engagements demonstrate the strength and continuity of Azerbaijan-Iran relations, which continue to grow in both bilateral and multilateral formats. As an active member of the international community, Azerbaijan is involved in numerous political, economic, and regional development projects.
President Ilham Aliyev has stated, “For us, geography means opportunity. Thanks to our history of coexistence and partnership with our neighbors, we have turned our geographic position into a strategic advantage. Today, we are expanding our horizons.” During a press statement, President Aliyev emphasized that the official visit of the Iranian President reflects the high level of bilateral ties. Our discussions covered many important issues, and we reaffirmed the strategic nature of Azerbaijan-Iran relations. We have spoken openly and sincerely. What matters most is that both sides are committed to strengthening our partnership.
The Azerbaijani and Iranian sides also discussed continued mutual support within international organizations such as the United Nations, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, ECO, and the Non-Aligned Movement. These platforms offer fruitful opportunities for collaboration in regional security and multilateral initiatives. The leaders also issued specific directives aimed at enhancing trade and economic ties between the two countries.
Particularly noteworthy is the cooperation in the field of transportation. In recent years, Azerbaijan has invested billions of dollars in modernizing its transport infrastructure, positioning itself as a key logistics and transportation hub on the East-West and North-South corridors. Azerbaijan and Iran are strategic partnership.
