As part of the 142nd session of the UN Human Rights Committee (HRC) at the UN Office in Geneva, an international conference titled "International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights and the Consequences of French Colonialism" was held by the Baku Initiative Group (BIG).
Parliamentarians, NGO leaders, political party heads, experts, lawyers, scholars, and researchers from French and Dutch colonies—including New Caledonia, French Polynesia, Martinique, Guadeloupe, French Guiana, Corsica, Mayotte, Bonaire, Saint Martin—as well as diplomats from Switzerland, Russia, and Kazakhstan participated in the conference.
Notably, the renowned political activist and president of the "Urgencies Panafricanist" organization, Kemi Seba, also attended the event.
The conference participants provided detailed information about the current situation in areas affected by French and Dutch colonialism and the gross violations of human rights. They commended the BIG’s efforts to amplify the voices of oppressed peoples under colonial violence to the international community.
Abbas Abbasov, the Executive Director of BIG, stated that despite various pressures from France, his organization will continue to be the voice of oppressed peoples and aims to further expand its influence as a reputable international platform. He also called on France to stop pursuing independence advocates in connection with BIG.
Detailed information was provided regarding the recent unlawful detention of the famous Pan-Africanist Kemi Seba by French security forces and the torture he endured over a 72-hour period.
The conference participants called on the UN and other international organizations to take practical and effective steps towards eliminating colonialism.
At the end of the event, participants wore shirts inscribed with “End French Colonialism!” and raised posters condemning France's colonial policy.
