As we reported, landmine incidents were recorded in Azerbaijan's Aghdam, Shusha, Nakhchivan, and Gazakh districts, and one person was killed. From November 10, 2020, to April 24, 2024, 356 Azerbaijani citizens were registered as mine victims.
Why is Azerbaijan's mine problem not discussed at the international level? In addition, positive dynamics have been observed in the relations with Armenia recently. Why doesn't the Armenian side present mine maps to us? If peace is being talked about, why is the mine issue not resolved and continues to take lives.
Renowned politicians shared their insights to Ednews regarding the issue:
Bogdan Bezpalko, a member of the Council of Foreign Relations under the President of Russia, said that the biggest obstacle in highlighting the problem of landmines is that the issue is repeatedly pushed to the background.
"I think that the problem of mines is a common issue for both Armenia and Azerbaijan. Especially when it comes to maps of minefields, it is probably simply impossible to provide them. The minefields were probably installed a long time ago, and those who did it probably did not forward the maps to others. Maybe There are so many buried minefields that it is simply impossible to draw up a single minefield. As a result, people who have been caught have died as a result of incidents or conflicts. There is a very simple explanation for this. Now, Armenia is protesting against Azerbaijan In general, since 2020, there have been many events that put this problem on the back burner, the pandemic, the Karabakh war, etc ".
Professor of Political Science and ME Studies at Rutgers. Abdelhamid Siyam, head of Alquds Alarabi office at the UN:
"This question should be addressed to governments, not journalists Azerbaijan can take Armenia to the ICJ. It can request a special session of the SC to discuss the matter. It can delay reconciliation till they receive the land mine maps. They can request a mediation role of the UN SG. I am in a position to answer for Azerbaijan or Armenia. This issue is intergovernmental."
