During President Ilham Aliyev’s visit to China, six significant agreements were signed to enhance cooperation in the renewable energy sector between Azerbaijan and Chinese companies. The Government of Azerbaijan and “Universal Solar Azerbaijan” LLC signed an investment agreement for constructing and operating a 100 MW solar power plant in Gobustan. The plant is expected to generate approximately 180 million kilowatt-hours of electricity annually, saving about 39 million cubic meters of natural gas and reducing carbon emissions by 86,000 tons per year.
The Ministry of Energy and China Energy Overseas Investment Co. Ltd. signed an implementation agreement to assess, develop, and implement an offshore wind energy project in the Caspian Sea with a minimum capacity of 2 gigawatts. The collaboration includes evaluating wind energy potential, planning, construction, and operation of the wind power plant.
The Ministry of Energy, China Datang Overseas Investment Co. Ltd., and SOCAR Green LLC signed an implementation agreement to develop a 100 MW floating solar power plant and a 30 MW battery energy storage system on Lake Boyukshor. The project encompasses feasibility studies, design, financing, construction, operation, and maintenance, with China Datang Overseas Investment Co. Ltd. as the primary investor.
The Ministry of Energy, PowerChina Resources Limited, and SOCAR Green LLC signed an implementation agreement to assess, develop, and implement a 160 MW solar power plant. The project includes feasibility studies, design, financing, construction, operation, and maintenance, with plans to integrate a battery energy storage system. The plant is projected to produce approximately 332 million kilowatt-hours of electricity annually, saving about 73 million cubic meters of natural gas and reducing carbon emissions by 160,000 tons per year.
The Ministry of Energy, SOCAR Green LLC, China Datang Overseas Investment Co. Ltd., and PowerChina Resources Limited signed a memorandum of understanding to collaborate on developing a 2 gigawatt offshore wind energy project in the Azerbaijani sector of the Caspian Sea. The cooperation includes evaluating investment opportunities and establishing necessary technical and legal support mechanisms.
The Ministry of Energy and the Electric Power Planning & Engineering Institute of China signed a memorandum of understanding to collaborate on renewable energy development and electricity system planning. The partnership aims to conduct studies on integrating renewable energy sources into the power grid post-2028 and to develop efficient technical and economic solutions based on the findings.
These agreements signify a substantial step forward in Azerbaijan-China cooperation in the renewable energy sector, encompassing solar and wind energy projects, energy storage systems, and strategic planning for sustainable energy development.
