The military junta administration in Gabon has presented a proposal to shut down the French military base in the country and reassess defense agreements with Paris during a national dialogue.
Citing haber.sol.com via Ednews, the political commission in Gabon has formally requested the closure of the French military base and a review of defense agreements with France.
According to Radio France Internationale (RFI), this proposal was submitted in a report by Gabon's military government during an ongoing national dialogue in Libreville, aimed at transitioning the country back to civilian rule.
The decision regarding this proposal is expected to be made at the general meeting of the participants of the Inclusive National Dialogue (DNI), which commenced on April 2 and is set to conclude soon.
The French military base, located north of Libreville, currently houses around 400 soldiers tasked with training Gabonese forces. In September, Paris temporarily suspended military cooperation with Gabon following a military coup that removed longtime president Ali Bongo from power. However, just a week after the suspension, the French Ministry of the Armed Forces announced a gradual resumption of operations.
