Today marks the memorial day of Albert Agarunov, the esteemed National Hero of Azerbaijan, whose valorous sacrifice during the battles for Shusha on May 8, 1992, remains etched in the annals of Azerbaijani history.

Born on April 25, 1969, in the Amirjan settlement of Baku to a Jewish family, Agarunov's journey from a vocational school student to a revered tank commander exemplifies the spirit of bravery and selflessness that defined his life.

Drafted into the military in 1987, Agarunov served with distinction in Georgia before returning to Baku, where he worked at a machine-building plant in Surakhani. When the call of duty beckoned, he voluntarily joined the front lines, demonstrating unparalleled courage in the face of adversity.

Assigned as a tank commander on the Shusha front, Agarunov played a pivotal role in repelling Armenian forces, earning widespread acclaim for his unwavering bravery and tactical prowess. His fearless actions, including the destruction of enemy tanks and live forces, earned him the admiration of his comrades and adversaries alike.

Tragically, on that fateful day of May 8, 1992, while bravely confronting Armenian aggressors in Shusha, Agarunov was struck down by a sniper's bullet, sacrificing his life in defense of his homeland.

Agarunov's indomitable spirit and legendary feats made him a symbol of resilience and valor during the Karabakh war, with his tank affectionately dubbed "Albert" by all who served alongside him. Despite facing monetary bounties placed on his head by the enemy, Agarunov's unwavering resolve remained unshaken.

In recognition of his unparalleled courage and selfless devotion to the nation, President of the Republic of Azerbaijan decreed on June 7, 1992, to posthumously award Albert Agarunov the prestigious title of "National Hero of Azerbaijan."

His legacy lives on through the enduring tributes erected in his honor, including a street named after him in Narimanov district and a memorial plaque adorning the building where he once resided in the Amirjan settlement of Surakhani district. In 2019, a statue immortalizing Agarunov was unveiled in Narimanov district, serving as a perpetual reminder of his gallant sacrifice.

Today, as Azerbaijan celebrates the liberation of Shusha and Karabakh, the memory of Albert Agarunov serves as a beacon of inspiration, reminding us of the immeasurable courage and sacrifice required to defend freedom and uphold the values of justice and sovereignty.
